Portrait Tips for Difficult Kids

Let me start by saying this:

Raising kids is not easy, raising your voice is. I absolutely lose my cool, but I hate it. Bickering and yelling are so very tiring. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

But I do know this little secret: sometimes, when a stranger is in charge instead of the parents, the kids act so much better. It’s magical.

My advice to clients - those with kids who are “difficult”…you know who you are.

Make a promise to me; a vow of sorts, a decree.

“I promise that I will not lose my shit during my session. I will
pretend that my child does no wrong and will resort to tickling the crap
out of them when they need to be shaken. I will not raise my voice or
scold the kid, even though there’s nothing more I’d like to do. Nicole’s got this, she’s in charge.”

Got it? Good.

This is what really happens at family portraits in real life. Dancing, laughing and silliness.

Tips to keep your cool when your kid is being a BEAST

Scenario 1:

Little Suzie is running around and not listening.

How I handle it:

I let her. Maybe she will sleep on the ride home.

Scenario 2:

     Mikey won’t join the pose

How I handle it:

I’ll try to trick him. Games are fun too!

Scenario 3:

Pat won’t smile at the camera.

How I handle it:

I will tell a joke…probably about farting. That’s always funny. Always.

If all that fails, bribery is also another option. Don’t tell me you’re too good for that. It works.

Suggested Bribes For Kids

  • candy
  • cartoons

One last thing: Ladies, your husbands need bribery. Sometimes my most
difficult clients are the dads, not the kids.

The parents in the photos above? They kept their cool, and it all worked out just fine.

P.S. Shout out to my dear friends and their brat who I couldn’t love more.
